In 1974 Professor Richard Gye became the first full-time Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1964 Gye was appointed Senior Lecturer in Surgery (Neurosurgery) at the University of Sydney, where he created the first academic unit of Neurosurgery in Australia. He worked also at Concord Repatriation General Hospital as Head of Neurosurgery.<ref>L. Mellor "Richard Spencer Butler Gye AO" in 150 Years, 150 Firsts: The people of the Faculty of the Faculty of Medicine, Sydney: Sydney University Press, 2006, 164-166.</ref> He is notable for the work he performed in the management of intracranial aneurysms, nerve grafting in leprosy, the epidemiology of head injury, and intercranial pressure monitoring.<ref>M. Centenary Book of the University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine, Sydney: Sydney University Press for The University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine, 1984, pp. 385-386.</ref> He moved to Oxford in 1971 to take up the position of Head of the Department of Neurosurgery. Returning to Australia in 1974 he became the academic Head of Neurosurgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. In the same year he was appointed Dean. During Gye's 15 year post as Dean, 43 new chairs were created in the Faculty.
