The Faculty of Medicine to The Sydney Medical School
From Faculty of Medicine Online Museum and Archive
Currently before the University of Sydney Senate is a motion to approve the usage of the name Sydney Medical School when referring to the Faculty of Medicine. This shift in nomeclature is aimed to promote a more readily identification with our medical school at the University of Sydney.
The Faculty came into being in 1856 and it was nearly thirty years later that a programme of medical education began and the Medical School, as it was known then, commenced teaching. Since that time, the term 'Medical School' has been used to refer to the programme of varied medical education as well as referring to buildings. For instance, the Anderson Stuart Building was referred to as 'the Medical School' for four decades until the bulding of 'the new Medical School', now known as the Blackburn Building.
